Behind the Scenes with Award Winning Designer – Annie Thompson

“You just have to get yourself out there in order for people to see you. Believing in yourself, together with talent and drive, is the only way to make it.”

In the fashion industry for more than 30 years, Annie Thompson and her label have boasted eco-fashion clothing collections making a unique blend of art and comfort. Originally from the East Coast, the award-winning independent fashion designer, who recently won the 2017 Design Forward Vanguard Award, has based her reputation on the ability to create hybrid womenswear and craft aesthetic blurring the line between reality and fantasy.

Nearly 10 years ago, one of the most sought-after best designer of Queen Street West (three years in a row) was closing the door of her eponymous boutique and opening her studio at the Junction. Famous for her talent and passion to create a footprint as small as possible, Annie Thompson has produced countless street-wear pieces with used up-cycled, recycled and organic fabrics. Regardless the year of purchase, Annie’s clothes have the magical power to allow infinite combinations as well as supersede a means of expression for all who wear them.

Over the years, Annie witnessed more changes of landscapes that one can follow: from national production to relocated facilities, from boutique to online retail points, from customer relationships to social media interactivity, she has seen them all. Working at her craft to make her dreams come true, the designer from Labrador innovates, travels and showcases. But more importantly, Annie Thompson tells her story.

When the ringing of bells signaled the schoolday was coming to an end, Annie ran back home to witness her mom switching on the sewing machine. In the little room dedicated to stage-set and display textiles, little Annie was admirative of her mom’s designs. Both a craft and an art form, at that time, creating customized clothes was especially an economic necessity.

Although, with her sense for trendy styles, it didn’t take long before Annie felt the urge to wear clothing she created to fit her own tastes and got the attention from her classmates.

“Did you make that?” was one of her daily inquiry. For Annie, the interest of her peers have actively contributed to the beginning of her professional journey and provided her with a fantastic opportunity to showcase, at a very young age, talent and creativity : “My very first client from 1981 is now one of my best friends.”

From her original ideas mixing unique fabrics with forever flattering cuts, Annie became a graduated fashion student that took action and opened her first studio. “I began in Peterborough, Ontario. There, I had a little store that was busy to the point that I didn’t want all my pieces to sell out simply because I didn’t have time to remake them,” she remembers. After nine years in Peterborough, in spite of a tremendous success and a low monthly rent, the designer was ready to take on a new challenge, a bigger challenge: Toronto.

“To make it work, you have to be sincere. You have to appreciate your clients, your suppliers, everyone and everything that enables you to put your ideas together and get the word out there. With the right support, you’ll be lucky enough to exceed your expectations and get a little bit better at each single attempt. You can’t work in a bubble and it took me a long time to realize it. You can’t make great things if no one knows about them.”

At 38, Annie believed in making choices, jumping off cliffs and reinventing herself and her career. In Toronto, a place where intuition meets drive, she exported and believed in three creative criteria that are mandatory to include in every design: look, comfort and functionality.

“It must look good, or it will not be worn. It has to be comfortable, or no one will want to wear it and it has to be functional, otherwise it wouldn’t be suited to your needs…and ultimately you will not wear it.”

In pursuance of her philosophy, at 58, Annie is what an art director is to a theatrical piece; making clothing that reflects a tangible authenticity and the immediacy of a constantly changing environment, she only creates outfits she wants to wear so that each piece is the result of a unique reflection.

 


Throughout initiatives such as Me Myself and Annie, where she invited 12 drastically different women to join a creative fitting session and her participation in fashion shows in New-York, Chicago, Boston, Washington and Toronto, Annie relentlessly produces signature collections.

Meet MPP Soo Wong, political involvement and a social calling

A road of determination leading to success

 

Powerful, compelling and simple, the first female Chinese-Canadian to be elected to the Ontario Legislature leaves no room for doubt as she claims from the outset “I do my things because I care about them”.

Although the brilliant politician is a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, she also currently works on Bill 79, an Act to proclaim the Nanjing Massacre Commemorative Day. She serves as the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Soo Wong is a member of the Standing Committee on the Legislative Assembly and Standing Committee of Regulations and Private Bills. Not only that, she also sits on the Health Education Social Policy Subcabinet Committee. She is also Deputy Speaker in the Legislature.

Behind the politician who is committed to combating childhood obesity, stands a woman forceful in her ability to encourage others to strive towards continuous improvement. As she aced bringing forward a resolution calling on the Government to declare May as childhood obesity awareness month, she initiated the first food labels in chains such as Mcdonalds and Tim Hortons across Canada. “Let’s just think of how many kids we can help with one piece of legislation when we know that one legislation can help 14 million Ontarians” shares Soo.

When Soo Wong landed in Ontario for the first time in 1970, she would have probably been the last one to imagine that in grade 10, at 14 years old,  she would become the President of her High School’s student council.

With no English-speaking parents at home, regardless of her immigration background and despite her young age, the child prodigy stood firm to earn the respect of her school’s supervising authorities. “If I didn’t stand my ground to support my peers, I would have been in trouble representing the student body” says Wong. Within one of Toronto’s largest schools, Soo Wong was taught the core principles of negotiation and quickly acknowledged that “learning doesn’t stop at 3:30pm because the clock says that the school day is over”.

In 1982, as a university student now enrolled in nursing school, Soo Wong remained true to herself when she introduced her big plan to revolutionize a unique event, a very big plan. She thought:

“the amount of energy needed to make two muffins is the same amount of energy needed to make six muffins. It equally requires the use of one batter and the oven to be turned on. So, why not make six?”

Like that, just a stone’s throw from the Hospital for Sick Children, where young patients with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) receive their treatment, Soo Wong decided that getting the kids fully immersed in a beautiful activity was no longer a possibility, but was meant to happen. Shutting down one of Toronto’s major avenues, she did not only transform what used to be a standard fundraising bed race for the charity organization, but she converted it into an integrative bed race, in the heart of the city, where kids could take part in the festivities held in their honour and simply be kids again. One success leading to another, with a faith to move mountains for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Soo’s true passion for public health was born and so was her career in fundraising with the charity organization, Shinerama Toronto.

Smoking By-law in York region.Dedicated to support others, after years as a registered nurse, Soo Wong felt the need to make the best use of her skillset and found herself appointed with a mission that brought to light her capacity to generate outstanding ideas from actions to words. At a time when it was permitted to smoke in public areas all over the country, in the City of York’s Health Department and York Region Health Services, Soo seized the opportunity to put words to paper when developing, implementing and evaluating No-Smoking By-Laws, policies and research on smoking rooms in various establishments.

 

“If you believe in something, you have to work on it and proactively fight for it”, asserts Soo. With that motto always in mind, not only is she one of Toronto’s strongest advocates of  change and a role model to many youngsters and immigrants, but the Chinese-Canadian politician also lends her name to many volunteer actions and educational programs.

“Changing and improving the lives of Canadians is simple, it starts with becoming the voice of those who are voiceless and putting the money where the mouth is: with young people”, concludes Soo Wong.
